William Gormley, MD, MPH, MBA, Director of the Neurosurgical Innovation, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, a founding member of Mass General Brigham, is making gains with his research on a portable robotic device capable of providing an emergency airway outside of the clinic setting without a need for a specialized clinician. This is accomplished by using computer vision, AI algorithms and robotics, thanks in part, to a Brigham Ignite award he received last year. To date he has developed a prototype of the device, displayed above, to ensure that it meets the intended performance criteria. Gormley received the award for his project titled Autonomous Robotic Artificial Intelligence-Guided Endotracheal Intubation, announced earlier.

The device, which brings a new resuscitation capability to field personnel, addresses an unmet medical need that can be deployed not only in resource-poor communities, but also in other areas when specialized clinicians are not available. The project aims to democratize care to patients who are not afforded the highest level ventilatory management due to lack of resources.

Gormley received the Development Grant from Brigham Ignite, which provides $200,000 in funding; additional resources will bring this device to market.
